READY PLAYER ONE

Overview: GHM&D began working on this project a few months into it’s development. After a few iterations to its design I was brought in to assist the large team of 2D & 3D motion designers as well as a fine team of Nuke compositors.

Roles included; creating new designs, animating them and developing existing assets from another artist for the children’s school desks, tablets and other devices seen on the left.

We also worked on initial iterations of the countdown clock. This was later taken and developed further by another artist. The same applies for the museum/librarian controls, where I worked in 3D to design and animate some of the parts still seen on the left that were again taken and furthered into the finished article.

Lastly GHM&D worked with the 2D lead to design and create the secondary/tertiary panels that can be seen in the HUDs. I then created templates in AFX that were applied to the various characters and used throughout the film.

GFX REEL : TERRITORY

EDUCATIONAL & TABLET GFX

Overview : Coming into my first film project was a little daunting, but working with the great team at Territory cleared up any nerves. One of my first and most prominent tasks was to take over from Melanie Keyzor in designing and animating the education UI that appears at the start of the film in the childrens digital desks and tablets. Mel had created a lot of the controls, so it was left to me to design the different task’s and lessons the kids would be undertaking.

I also had to create the news bulletin for when the main story broke. This meant additonal graphics and content needed to be built to fit in with the tablets current style. After sign off I exported several packs that went off to the compositing team at ILM. They were then responsible for cutting out what they needed and overlaying them within the final screens.

HUD & INTERACTIVE GFX

My other tasks on the job were to work on the more interactive elements. These were built in Illustrator and After Effects before being handed to the guys working in Cinema 4D.

For the countdown clock, I was responsible for some of the earlier work. I helped design and animate the layout, container and clock. These were taken over by another artist later on and finalized with them before sign off.

For the librarians controller I worked closely with Johan Dekker to add elements to the design, as well as set up some of the animations for the opening / closing of the hologram. These were all done directly in Cinema 4D.

For the interactive HUD I helped design, animate and template the smaller ‘secondary and tertiary’ UI boxes that can be seen either side of the main window. These were used for each of the characters with colours changing depending on which avatar it was for, and worked there way into the final film.

It was disappointing to not recieve a screen credit, but an IMDB one just about made up for it. I’d have to wait a little longer for that honor.
