formula 1 : 2024 : Titles


Overview: We at GHM&D were thrilled to partner with our fantastic clients at Terrtitory for an exhilarating project: crafting the new season's Formula 1 titles! The vision was to design a series of dynamic 3D animations that would be rendered and then projected live in a studio, forming the backdrop for driver shoots at IMG Studios. Following this, the integrated live footage and background visuals would be seamlessly edited with additional 3D elements and overlaid with Chris’s distinctive 2D name UI.

Our core team for this endeavor included fellow CG/Motion Designer Ed Fergusson, all guided by the creative leadership of AD Chris Angelkov and CD Ryan Hayes, and expertly managed by producer Tom Bogda. Together, we dived into concept development, rigorously testing various styles to present to the client.

We strategically allocated responsibilities:

  • Chris: Handled 2D UI Design & Animatic.

  • Ed: Took charge of 3D Tunnel Build & Lighting.

  • GHM&D: Focused on 3D Car Manifestations & Texturing.

Our primary contribution involved exploring innovative car manifestations, experimenting with diverse material looks and techniques. Early tests involved transforming intriguing car parts into abstract shapes, layering them with different materials. As the project progressed, this evolved into a more refined approach, merging and duplicating elements rather than heavily abstracting them, all lit for a polished, filmic appearance. The next challenge was to blend these concepts, creating the effect of car materials peeling away to unveil the final, sleek car paint.

We rigorously tested various techniques—Material Mattes, Booleans, Vertex Maps, and Poly FX—each offering a subtle difference in animation and feel. While we personally favored the crisp lines achieved with Booleans, the client's vision led us to implement a Poly FX technique, expertly developed by Ed.

Although my direct involvement concluded early due to budget considerations, the team pushed forward, successfully delivering the final product.
