apple tv : extrapolations

Overview: GHM&D was lucky enough to be invited back to work for DNEG on Apple Tv’s ‘Extrapolations’.

Throughout the project GHM&D created 2D and 3D FUI visuals for various screens and holograms, we also helped animate other sections that had already been designed. These can be seen below with full details of our role.

Year: 2022

Software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4d,

Plugins: Red Giant Suite

Credits: DNEG, GHM&D

episode 01 - device holograM

GHM&D was tasked with creating a holographic representation of the ‘disputed area of land’ based in Franz Josef Land. The 3D map would animate up and out of the tablet that the main characters were using. As well as this, we also had to create the devices interface from where the hologram originated from. We designed the assets in Illustrator and then animated in After Effects. Renders / moving UI for the holograms were then exported into Cinema 4D and rendered using Redshift. The topology lines were created using Sketch and Toon within C4d . The final pieces was saved as passes and handed over to the Nuke compositors.

episode 02 - breeding grounds ui

We were next tasked with created a large interface for Rebecca’s research on the whales breeding grounds. This interface required a lot of different elements that sat within the same aesthetics as the other designs of the episode. We used some exisiting assets to link between the technology used in different areas, but otherwise created most of the screen ourselves using Illustrator. These in turn were animated in After Effects and exported to ‘comp’.

episode 04 - military drone hud

In episode 04 we were asked to take some existing drone HUD UI from another episode and add in a more miliarty feel. Whilst we didn’t complete the final design, elements of what we created can be found in the layout. Already built within After Effects we adapted the existing project and created some 2D assets that helped emphasize parts of the story. This included small data encryption windows, iconography and military styled bars. We also added in more general elements that might be found on a drone or aircraft HUD.

episode 07 - building holograms

One of our other roles was help provide suplimental holograms that represented faux realistic coporation branding. Its hard to tell if these were used or not (as there were a lot) but these if so were added to the shots to extra designs / animations in case they were needed. These were built within Cinema 4D and sent straight to comp. Below shows an example of others used within the episode as well as some of the designs we built.
